'89 88HP temp sensor

I installed a temp gauge for my '89 88HP Evinrude and connected it to the tan wire coming out of the harness in the engine. I believe this tan wire is connected to 2 temp sensors (1 in each head). Or are these temp sensors just switches for the warning buzzer in the remote control box? If they are just switches...where is the sensor for the temp gauge or do I have to install one?

Thanks,
Tony

FreeBee.... Hopefully you received the reply that I left you within a different post. But, if not, you do need a seperate bracket and sender. The two items list for about $33. If you're interested, you can have the two items for $22 and I'll take care of shipping.

ReevesJ32@aol.com

Tony.... Just in case you missed my reply on "SoLittle's" post:

FreeBee..... The sensors in the cylinder heads are the overheat warning sensors. Connecting anything to the other end of that system, other than to the warning horn will cause the horn to be erratic.

The 88hp does not have a warning setup for the fuel system (Fuel Restriction). Also the 88hp does not incorporate a VRO, but rather has a normal fuel pump (you mix the oil with your fuel). The warnings for your engine are:

1 - A steady constant beep = Overheating.

The engines using a VRO setup have the warnings as follows:

1 - Steady constant beep = Overheating.
2 - Beep every 20 seconds = Low tank oil level.
3 - Beep every other second = VRO failure, no
oil, oil restriction, oil/air leak in line.

The V/6 engines also have a fuel restriction warning which is the same as overheating = A steady constant beep.

Fee free to send pics if you like.

ReevesJ32@aol.com

Re: '89 88HP temp sensor

Joe,

So if I hear the horn it should only be from overheating. I don't think I am overheating......should the horn sound when the key is first turned on? The horn comes on intermittently, maybe I have a bad (intermittent) ignition switch? Sometimes the switch hangs up and the starter stays engaged. Could it be the ignition switch?

Re: '89 88HP temp sensor

Tony.... Yes, the horn should beep when you first turn the key on. That indicates that the warning system horn is functioning properly.

There should be a wire (usually purple) leading from the ignition switch (12 volts when the key is on) to the horn, and another wire (tan) leading from the horn to the heat warning sensors in the cylinder heads. If it is a three (3) wire horn, there will be another "black" wire going to ground. Anything else hooked up to that horn will create a problem.

If the above wiring is correct, reverse the purple and tan wire. That horn is finicky. If the wires are on the wrong plug on terminal, the horn will be erratic.

Yes, on your engine (88hp), unless you've added something that doesn't belong there, the only warning you'll have is the overheating warning (steady constant beep). Note that the warning sounds off before the engine is hot enough to do any damage.

The ignition switch hanging up problem... If the key is actually sticking in the "Start" position, replace the switch. If, on the other hand, the key is returning to the normal run position but the starter stays engaged, that indicates a sticking "Starter Ssolenoid".

Solenoids go bad in that manner due to a faulty or low battery which causes arcing in the contacts within the solenoid. The cure, if this is the case, is to make sure you have a good battery, and replace the solenoid.

Re: '89 88HP temp sensor

Thanks Joe,
One more question re: the temp gauge. I bought a teleflex gauge (not realizing the differences in senders). If I get the sensor for the head, can I use it with this gauge?

I will check the wiring and perform the test you suggested regarding the swapping of the purple and tan wires. I hope this solves my intermittent warning problem. As far as the ignition switch is concerned.....the key is hanging up.....I'm wondering if something in the switch can cause the horn to go off intermittently.

Thanks again.....

PS....This is a great site!!!!!!!
