two quick questions

1) prolly a slightly dumb but unimformed question as this is my first I/O....what to technically refer to the motor as. 2.3L OMC, or 2.3L Ford which it has both names on the motor, asked a mechanic today(one ive had problems out of latly) and he said with a ur an idiot face on the omc is outdated marine company and its just a 2.3L that all gm's are the same or something along those lines....im kinda confused on this right now

2) very simply put....i have gas in my oil drained it and its a milky color very runny and smells like gas ive spoke with two mechanics and both said fuel pump is out but i was just informed by another great iboater that it could possibly be a cracked block i believe the boat does start on the twist of the key and the mechanic that worked on it last week(putting in new manifold) said he ran it for almost an hour


i have not had the boat in the water yet due to jus getting it and finding out about the oil problem and i have got a fuel pump in that the mechanic ordered but its the wrong one and have to send it off

Welcome to my nithmare with the 2.3L OMC. I just bought my 89 Four Winn a couple of weeks ago and have had it apart every sense. I though I had a fubared exhaust manifold, ( I think I am gonna get luck though).
I have heard good things about the motors for what they are, but if you haven't already figured it out it is almost impossible to get another exhaust manifold (if and when you need one). So take care of your maintenance.
I can't help you with your fuel/oil problem other than to say they should remain separate. You will have someone along shortly with an answer or great troubleshooting tips.

I'm not an OMC guy but two things -

The mechanic acted like a know it all jerk...I'm confident Iboats will help.

And if you want to do a compression test - A universal tester is available at sears for 30 bucks.

You have two problems:

Fuel in the oil is a leaking fuel pump diaphram, cchange it and the problem is solved.

The more difficult problem is to find where the water is getting into the oil. Could be many things, including a cracked block, head etc.

I didn't read the part about water in the oil, but the fuel in the oil is the diaphram from the fuel pump. Check it after that and all should be fine?? Keep us updated in this one.

i will be sure and due that called the mechanic to ask him if he could order me another one i was at work at the time and he said id have to bring the old one in first and if it was like i got it not dirty or anything and if the box was clean he could POSSIBLY get me another one....ive got another mechanic said he could have one here monday morning but i dont want to have to shell out another 150 dollars for a part i already paid for guess ill have to wait yet another week to get out on the lake

id pull the old pump and take it to an auto parts store and get a new one there. It is the same as a auto pump, but if it says marine on it it just costs 3 times as much. Remember that the motor was bought from an auto manufactuer and adapted for marine use.
Just get a good one, dont use the china rebuilt. Those chinese kids just dont do the same quailty work they used to.

so heres the update went back to the marina i originally ordered my part from got a FULL refund then went 5 minutes down the road to another place told them what i needed had it in by 8 oclock the next morning


so now ive had the boat in the water and i got yet another couple of questions

1)while idling around in the bay area my boat overheats fast, my buddy didnt even have time to park the truck and get back by the time it was up around 210
once going anything over idle speed it cools down and runs fine-is this a fuel pump issue?

2)what is the expected speed of these boats i was running 33mph as indicated on the dash at WOT-this boat hasnt been really ran for a while is there a break in period

3)while running the motor across the lake there is a small amount of smoking coming from the lower unit is this normal?
