Sirs. I have a 89 Bayliner Capri 2150 With 5.8 OMC. The problem is when you put it under hard throttle like pulling up a wakeboarder there is a popping sound in the outdrive. It pops hard and you can feel it in the floor of the boat but it stays in gear. It will only pop 3 or 4 times the it wont do it any more till you take off again. The u joints and gimbal bearing seem to be good. Any advice?

Drain the drive lube and inspect for metal debris.

Did you pull the drive off to inspect the u-joints and gimble bearing?

Hello,
The sound you're hearing is most likely the clutch dog slipping on the forward gear, and if it hasn't done significant damage yet, it will. This is a common problem with OMC and is related to a worn or improperly adjusted cable, or too much drag on the cable. If you look back over several pages of posts you'll see this problem. It's often referred to as a "clunk".

I'll post this link which will explain it. Hopefully you can fix the problem with a cable and or adjustment and won't need to have the gears replaced. Good luck!
