Hey guys,,,
I been readind and readind several post about Marine Plywood vs Presure Treated and on,on,on,,,,,,,,,

Can I just go buy some good grade os 5/8 plywood and SOAK It with resin on the bottom and top?

I tore out the deck on this Capri,,,,,,cut out the seat boxes,,,,,,,,,all the wood was rotton,,,,,foam was rotton etc.

My plan is to go back with a sturdy deck,,,,,,install 2 pedistal type chairs. This boat will be use for Fishing,,rigged with downriggers etc. I's not a pleasure boat but it will be a nice Fishing machine as I get through with this.

PM me if you would like.

There is very good discussion here:

You can do whatever you want to do. It all depends on your idea of quality of repair and how long it will last.

IMHO, the only issue with sealing both sides of ply is that it MAY retain water if the "seal" is breached.

A perfect example of "sealed" ply is; "FRP" (fiberglass reinforced plywood". FRP is a staple in the truck body and truck semi trailer business. Much of it lives in some pretty nasty enviro's. Read; WET.

I have sealed decks (both sides) and I have done others, one side.

I can't say as to which lived longer. If you do seal both sides. You have to be VERY careful as to not break that seal.

Thank you DJ,,,,

What are your thoughts on a grade of lumber?

1. Go to a REAL lumberyard.

2. Get the best grade they have that you can afford. Grade will determine the number of "voids" in the ply and the tightness of the veneer grain. A real lumberyard will be able to show examples of the various grades.

As stated in the other thread, many finer grades of ply use the same adhesives (bonding agents) as Marine.

As also mentioned, this is NOT a job you want to do over, on the same boat.

Stop at Lowes and Depot and get the grade off of the CDX and Pressure treated ply they have. Also count the ply's in their 1/2 and 5/8" ply.

Then go to a real lumber yard and talk to someone who knows plywood. They most likely have pressure treated in a higher grade, with fewer voids, more ply's etc. You will pay a little more, but you can get a better product.

Compare what you can get between the lumber yard vs the home centers and make your decision based on cost, life expectancy, and/or how long you expect to own the boat.

If you go to shareaproject.com and browse the boat projects, you will see what other people have done and get a few ideas on methods and practices. And don't forget to check out project "Project Long Haul" by Realgun. He completely redid his Bayliner. Makes for a fun read.

The money you save by using CDX or P/T and poly resin over marine plywood and epoxy will buy a lot of accessories for your boat.

Just something to think about.

Have fun! And post pictures!

Mark.

Re: 89 Bayliner Capri "New Deck Question"

I found out today that Gander Mountain sells 7 ply 4x8 sheets with no voids for $69.

I'm going to go ahead and go with that. They have the seats and Bulkhead Carpet I want too! Cheap!

Re: 89 Bayliner Capri "New Deck Question"

Depending on your use of the boat, you might want to re-think installing carpet in the boat. My experience is it is hard to clean, it gets stinky, it holds sand and grit and generally looks bad after just a few years. Consider marine vinyl instead. The two big names in marine grade deck are Nautolex and Maritech. I liked the Deco Dot by Nautolex.

This spring the carpet in my Bayliner gets pulled out. The deck will be done in either glass/polyseter/gelcoat or Nautolex Deco Dot vinyl.

Carpet in a boat? Been there, done that. Not again.

I thought there would be something out there better than that carpet. Thanks for the info. Where can I get this and is it easy to install?

Re: 89 Bayliner Capri "New Deck Question"

I see that you want to use post mounted seats. Because you are installing all new deck, you have the opportunity to add reinforcement where the pedistal seats will be mounted. Consider attaching a 18" square piece of plywood to the underside of the deck and attach with construction adhesive. Use a few screws to hold it in place until dry. Then you will have some serious rigid floor where the posts put the stress.

Re: 89 Bayliner Capri "New Deck Question"

Hey, Thanks for the advice. I was looking and I see I will have to build some sort of box for the seat pedistal. If I don't ,,,the seat will bw setting to far inward and not in line the the steering console.

Thanks , Tim
