If you pull the shift cable off and pull it into foward gear and turn the prop by hand, should you be able to spin prop freely in foward. It feels like it wants to grab something but it lets go. In reverse it grabs nothing.

Welcome to iboats!

That's quite normal. You'll also notice that when you put it in REV, it'll do the same thing except in the opposite direction. Sort of like a ratchet. Common for Dog-clutch drives.

Thanks Rick, So why do you have to take the shift cable off and spin prop to find true neutral in the shift adgustment procedures? It seems to me that all you have to do is pull the cable and make a mark w/ a sharpee and then do the same for the oppisite direction. When you pull or push the shift cable manually while spinning the prop, will the cable move a little more? What im trying to do is adjust the cable. I have the hastings copy. It reads easy, but if you have never done this procedure it leaves a lot to quess at. Engine is new 5.7, red cable is free and moves easy and cobra sterndrive. Thanks again. Also, should i be able to rev up engine w/ remote control by pulling up button and moving it foward. Mine goes into gear everytime while i am still holding the button.

My Cobra's clutch doesn't ratchet unless in neutral, when in drops into gear I cannot turn the prop forward or reverse. When making adjustments on the cable you have to turn the prop by hand and assure it's fully into gear. If you can turn the prop then then clutch dogs are not fully engaged forward or reverse.

That's pretty odd. They should ratchet clockwise in forward and anti clockwise in reverse.

Oh you know, maybe it does ratchet in one direction, (had brain frt) but it does definately lock into gear.

Well, does it lock in foward and reverse. When it put the cable in foward and start to spin the prop it should lock right? How about reverse. And if ti doesnt lock what is wrong? Thanks guys

Specifically, when in FWD, you should NOT be able to turn the prop "reverse"
(it should "click" when you turn it "forward")

AND when in REVERSE, you should NOT be able to turn the prop "forward" (but it should also click when you turn it reverse) Clear as mud?

If it doesn't lock, then the "dogs" are not engaged in what ever gear you're testing it in.....or the dogs are "dead" (damaged).

When you move the shift shaft,

you're essentially moving the shift dog (#38 below) forward and aft so that it either locks to the FWD or REV gear (#32 & 33)

You want to have it exactly (or pretty close) in the middle when you're in Neutral..... so that it positively locks into FWD or REV when you shift it. If you're a little one way or another with the shift cable adjustment, it may not go all the way into one or the other gear....(with damaging results)
