89 evenrude 150 starter remains engaged

when i bought the 150 it would only backfire. the flywheel key had sheered.
after replacing it, all good! till we went to the lake, starter stayed engaged and sheered the key again--no fishing my question is WHY? is a spring weak./ does that happen? or will just polish and oil the shaft?
can I just replace the spring?

Clean and lightly lube the shaft.
