Hi all,

I'm putting a new timer base on my 1989 225 today and have a question about the flywheel:

Is the inner ring that spins inside the timer base supposed to be "clean" so that the stainless steel shows, or is it supposed to have a coating over it? The reason I ask is that mine is mostly stainless, but there appears to be a coating of some sort on the lower parts (kind of like the stuff cheap magnets are made of). I examined the old timer base and it looks like it might have rubbed off the inside ring of the timer base.

Is this material supposed to be there or should I clean it off before reassembly? If it's supposed to be there, should I be in the market for a new flywheel  ?

Thanks!

If you're speaking of the sides of that sensor magnet portion of the flywheel, the one with the two sensor magnet slots in it, there should be nothing on it except paint. The surface should be smooth with the slots perfectly visible.
