Hi all,

I'm putting a new timer base on my 1989 225 today and have a question about the flywheel:

Is the inner ring that spins inside the timer base supposed to be "clean" so that the stainless steel shows, or is it supposed to have a coating over it? The reason I ask is that mine is mostly stainless, but there appears to be a coating of some sort on the lower parts (kind of like the stuff cheap magnets are made of). I examined the old timer base and it looks like it might have rubbed off the inside ring of the timer base.

Is this material supposed to be there or should I clean it off before reassembly? If it's supposed to be there, should I be in the market for a new flywheel
?

Thanks!
