I have a 89 Force 50hp that starts right up, runs great, but will not turn off.

I replace the ignition switch and believe everything is wired correctly. At the switch, I confirmed short to ground on blue wire (M terminal) in off or on position. I confirmed short to ground on white wire (M terminal) in off position and open in the on position.
at the terminal strip on the motor. I confirmed short to ground on blue in off and on position. I confirmed short to ground on white in off and open in on. coming off the terminal strip opposite white wire is a black/yellow stripe wire.

any suggestions?

thanks.

black yellow is the stop wire
start it up, touch that black wire to engine ground, if the motor turns off, that means from that point forward is the problem, if it still runs, u need a new switch-box

I tested that wire with the switch turned to the off position, it is shorted to ground. Guess its the switch-box. Is that the name of the part? I will have to do a search to find one, I know its an old engine.
thanks

so u unhooked the wire started the motor and try touching it to the engine block?

while running. If I touch black/yellow strip wire to the engine block, nothing happens. If I use a longer piece of wire, touch one end to the black/yellow strip wire and other end to ground the engine cuts back. same thing happens when I turn the key to the off position. engine still runs, but sounds like it is running on one cylinder or simply under powered. it cuts back but does not cut off.

thanks

Now wait a minute.Thats not logical. Everything is grounded through the block. How many hours does the engine have on it? Is it highly carboned? If you have glowing carbon particles in the head, pistons, or on the plugs, you could be auto igniting. It acts like a glow plug on a model airplane engine. In the late '70s and '80s before they refined pollution controls, cars frequently did this. Turn the key off and they kept running like a diesel.

Re: 89 Force 50hp will not turn off

Have no idea how many hours are on the engine. I have not put many hours on it, but I purchased it second hand. It runs great. compression is 130 in one cylinder, 132 in the other. I decarboned it last year so I don't believe it is very carboned. Less than 5 hours since then.

I am not a mechanic, please keep that in mind, but I was thinking maybe the switch box was turning off one coil and not the other. possible?

deisiling would be the term for the motor running after it is shut down which could be caused by excessive carbon getting hot enough to fire off gas even with no spark plug ignition. What color wire do you have going to the I on your switch? Probably blue or white. I believe this wire needs to be grounded in order to kill the motor. Did this problem exist before you replaced the ignition switch?

Re: 89 Force 50hp will not turn off

Can't remember what wire is going to I, but I know Blue goes to one M and White goes to the other M.

Yes, thats why I replaced the switch. started doing it last year, I would choke engine to turn it off. figures it might be the switch. In the off position, both blue and white are shorted to ground. I confirmed this at the switch and at the engine.
thanks

alright here is the wiring code
WIRINGCOLORS.jpg

like i said, if u take the bl/yellow (white in ur case) off the terminal block and ground it, motor should stop, if not bad powerpack

I can ground it and it does not stop. It cuts back. like running on one cylinder instead of two, but it keeps running.

well, I have a power pack on the way. its a used pull. hope it okay.

thanks for the help.

Re: 89 Force 50hp will not turn off

I think the yellow black wire is for the starting solinoid. If you touch that to ground when switch is in start position you will probably short somthing out. When you test for ground on outboards it is hard because of the low resistance in ignition parts. Using an ohm meter you may read as low as .6 ohms which will appear that that point is tied to ground when in essence it is going through a couple hundred feet of wire. I am a chrysler guy so someone else will have to verify the color coding on a force. Your best bet to verify that the cd unit is grounded is to jumper the white wires on the terminal block on the motor to the black ground lug on the terminal block. I hope someone else with a force can chime in on this. Like I mentioned I have a chrysler and the colors may be different.

Re: 89 Force 50hp will not turn off

FIXED. I bought a replacement power pack. As I was removing the old powerpack, I noticed the black (ground) wire from the power pack was not grounded to the engine, the connector had broken.

Put a new connector on it, grounded to engine and engine now turns off with switch. Works great.

Thanks for all the help.
