Ok, its a 1989 force 85hp,

I have spark on all 3 wires , but sputters and misfires at low RPM. Ive had it out earlier this week on the water. It did get up on and go about 35-37ish MPH. WOT seemed to sound very good all 3 cyls. hitting nice.

Carbs have been cleaned , timing is center mark WOT cranking speed.

Now there was a flat spot in the throttle i had to work thru to get the speed.

Ok , so i did a little testing. with the engine idling, and a volt meter connected, black ground, red to stator lead 1 , meter shows approx 180V

Stator lead 2 only shows between 45-68V ..

I dont have a DVA adaptor at the moment, but being such a differance in values , am i looking at replacing a stator?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Also i read another thread stating someone tried to use the one working side of the stator to charge both CD units, is that really possible?

OK , heres a little update, tried jumping the one side of the stator to charge both CD's didnt work .. lol .. with the one side of the stator disconnected, seems to idle better without the hard miss. I figure thats from not having a proper charge to one CD unit.

Ok again i hooked up the meter. .

black to engine ground, red to stator lead , idling one side of the stator is doing about 20-35VDC , and the other side at idle is doing about 85-95VDC.

Would it be a safe call to say stator?

Thanks again to anyone who has a little more knowledge about these, i play with mercruiser I/O's in my boat. so this is a touch different for me!

Been a mechanic all my life tho.

Re: 89 force 85hp stator issues, i think!

And on another note, tried a diff stator today .. and still has a nasty misfire with both yellow leads connected to the CD units. if i disconnect one side of the stator(yellow leads) ... it run on 2 cylinders. when i connect the second stator (yellow) lead back to the CD unit .. it misfires and dies ... i was thinking CD unit to start with , but noticed a large diff in the voltage of the 2 yellow wires ,,, but now i read there is a low and high side of the stator.

i now have to stators that do that same thing ... so CD or trigger are the next 2 items to try out

again .. DVA meter on the way over today ... anyone with a good breakdown of the testing of stator, trigger and CD's???
