I am in the proccess of cleaning the carbs, and the book (Clymers) says to remove the main nozzel. Well I cant get the screwdriver in the slot because the idle tube sticks too far down. Also, the book says that the tube should be bent so as to contact the side of the main nozzle, and it is not. They also have a note that if the tube is note touching it will cause the motor to run execsivly lean. Anybody out there know what the deal is??? Thanks a million Greg

The 50HP Force carb has a screw-in idle tube. Sometimes they break when you attempt to remove them. Solution: Do not remove them, if it can be avoided. If you must, go ahead and remove the nozzle first, using the excactly-sized screwdriver. If it breaks, it's there forever.

12 Footer, what kind of carbs do they use on Force engines. Are they Tillotson like the Chryslers? Come to think of it, is Tillotson still in business?

Re: 89' Force carb question

Hey gjv23. I really like my clymor however I think the carb blow up is really misleading. They dont really tell you if it is a WB or MD. I did mine two weeks ago and I think you are confusing the fuel nozzel with the main fuel jet. The main fuel jet is a small screw part number 7 that uses a slotted screw driver to remove and is brass. This is only on the wb carb. (This is figure 32 in my manual.) Do not attemt to take out the fuel nozzel even though it looks threaded. It wont come out. You can blast carb cleaner in it and run a wire gently through it to get gunk out of it.
My carb kit from napa came with blow ups of three different carbs. I used these to determine which one I had and did the rebuild off of this sheet. In my case it was the wb carb.

Hope this helps good luck

Re: 89' Force carb question

on page 172 in the clymer force shop manual fig. 61 shows the idle tube touching the nozzle, and the note in the instructions says that the motor will run too lean if it doesn't. Mine don't even come close to touching they are almost perfectly centered. Any ideas???????????? Thanks Greg

Re: 89' Force carb question

That's correct. It will idle, but not stabillly so. And that's when it runs lean. RPMs will ramp-up and down on it's own if not touching, but it's very easy to get it to touch. Just re-stress it when you have it out. Be carefull tho, you dont want to bend it,as it may kink. Then, you would be in trouble.
While the pickup tube is inside the nozzle,(a perhaps a safer method), you can take a screwdriver and wedge it in behind the tube about halfway up. Then, with the flat blade of another screwdriver, you can re-stress the end.
Just don't go too far

Re: 89' Force carb question

It may have been assembled at the factory that way, or someone got over zealous with a screwdriver.
It should still run pretty good, but would have to have been compensated for by adjusting the mixture screw out a bit more. Also, when done, you want this motor to run rich enough to emitt some smoke. It is protected at that poiunt, whereas, too lean, means not enough oil to lube the thing properly. Even if it is running waaay too rich, it'll just foul-out the plugs prematurely (they only last 80hours max anyhow).

Re: 89' Force carb question

12footer, thanks a million. On these 2 carbs the tubes on each are down so far I can't get a screwdriver into the slot in the nozzle. Maybe I'll just clean everything up, and not worry about it. Greg
