Re: 89 Four Winns Freedom 170 Floor / Stringer Rebuild PICS

I've read rick ryder's thread. It helped me get started on mine, and has given me ideas on how things are done. I feel like it's plenty of support, especially if the cap is still on. You've got the lower support from the bunkers, and the upper support from the cap. I think it should be ok. If you decide to take the cap off, then you'll probably have a little flex.....

Anybody want to chime in on my 2"x2" wood strips and tee-nuts to support the gas tank access panel???? Bascially this is how it was done before, except that the strips of wood were simply screwed to the stringers.....

Matt:

Yeah, I'm doing the job with the cap on so, you're right, I should have plenty of hull support along with trailer bunks. It would be nice if I could pull the cap easily but I don't have the facility or tools to do it. Mine is a cuddy so I "can't wait" to see how accessible the stringers are up there.

I've read up to page 3 on your thread and believe the gas tank supports matter is on page 4. I'm at the office and cheating between work and iboats. When I get a moment to study it I'll chime in with my two pennies.

Yeah, page 4. Anyone take a look at post #99 of my second pic. It's a paint drawing. These support 2"x2"s will go along the stringers and 1 at each bulkhead before and after the gas tank. I'm hoping they'll support the tank access panel. It's real similar to what was in there, except that I"m going a completely different mounting technique. It should be strong enough, I'm thinking, considering it was just screws before holding the strips on....However, you never know. Plan is to put 5 or 6 bolts/teen-nuts along each long strip, and 3 to 4 bolt/tee-nuts on the bulkheads. I'll probably dual layer the access panel since it's rather large piece of deck, or will this be necessary when it's glassed well?
Will the 2x2"s be strong enough? Thoughts

What is the span of the opening that you will be supporting the deck on the 2x2's? How thick is the deck plywood? Would it be better to span 2x4's across over the top of the tank to support the deck like I did in mine? Or are you making the access so you can remove the tank?or is it just to access the sender, fuel, vent and fill lines?

As far as the trailer you are both on....if it's a bunk style you should be ok with the cap on ;)

Rick,
I went back and re-read sections of your thread today. I couldn't remember how you had done yours. I want to say it is no more than 24-26 inches across, but I'm strongly considering notching the tops of my 2x2s to accommodate cross beams for extra support anyways. I know it didn't have these when I tore it apart. The deck is 1/2", but it's obviously very strong after I csm and woven coat both sides. It's really being built for that just in case moment if the tank needs removing.

I would run cross braces if your using 1/2'' ply.... even with the glass I would think it may bow when you have people standing on the hatch. Be sure to leave some air space and not have anything resting on the tank if it's aluminum.

If space allows, you might consider placing some Blue/Pink Slab foam on top of the tank between it and the bracing.;)

Only problem with that Wood is if the tank is aluminum and moisture gets in between it....it will corrode the tank.

Tank is hard plastic! I think I'm going to go with some cross beams. Even if they're 1x2"s glassed, it should add some strength, as opposed to nothing at all.
