My son in law's motor. Since I saw a video I suspected worn gear/clutch dog but on disassembly found them to be fine. I had read (can't find it now) where a fellow had the shift rod bend lengthen. I can't find anthing in the manual on how to remove and replace the shift rod , if that's the issue. Now I need an expensive tool to get the prop shaft back in too. Any help would be appreciated.

An 89 model does not suddenly need a different shift rod.----Is the lower shift rod fully screwed into the lower unit ?----I think I made that tool using a plastic plumbing fitting at 29 cents.

thanks. Any chance you or anyone else has the dimensions for the tool. I've seen it used on youtube. Not sure if enough shown to fashion one up based on the video.

The oem upper and lower rods combined sell for about $100, give or take, if that makes a difference.
