89 Johnson 40hp - Tilt Assist Cylinder Help

While working on my engine this weekend, I placed the motor in the up position and now it will not come down.

My motor has the lever on the right side that actuates a rod in order to manually raise or lower the motor.

My question - I cannot find information on how to service this cylinder assembly. I have a Johnson Repair manual and it don't show this type of cylinder only power tilt & trim.

I need a diagram that shows the mechanical break down of this part and perhaps a part number for a rebuild kit.

Thanks,

not one, sounds as if cable from lever to cylinder broke, easiest way to get to it, is to remove motor from boat. and go from boat side.

Tash,

I have the cylinder assembly out of the motor. It looks like the inner seal failed and all the fluid seeped past the seal. It is stuck in the "up" position.

There isn't a rebuild kit for this part?

I removed the cylinder assist assembly and put it in a vice on my bench. Removed the cable assembly and used a flat head screw driver to gently pry the cable actuator up and the ram moved! Awesome!

I reinstalled the assembly and adjusted the ball joint down two turns and it works like a champ!

Hope this will help fellow boaters......
