Hello all,
I have a 1968 Starcraft fiberglass 16 footer that came with a 1958 evinrude 35 big twin. I'm having problems with this engine due to a faulty ignition problem. However someone locally has a 1989 Mercury Classis 40 horsepower motor for sale. The carbs were rebuilt and a new impeller installed. Price is $450 and with the controls. I'm just wondering if this is a good motor. I am coming to you with this because the experts here can tell me any common problems with these motors. You know, how you always hear stories from fisherman about the one boat that always had problems- starting-running-idling? It is a long shaft, electric start, no power trim, but hydraulic assit for it. I would like to keep the old motor, but I think I would be spending much more money in it in the long run.

Please tell me what you think

Thanks in advance
David

The 40 sounds like a good deal barring any major issues.

No major issues, also the oil tank/sensor has been replaced.
Does this engine have a pretty good reputation?

Thanks

So what do you guys think? I'm getting ready to buy it. Couple of more things to try on the Rude, but it's soon enough coming to a new home. Anyone have issues with the 40 Merc?
