I have a clean low hour 1989 4.3 mercruiser with a starter problem.

About 50% of the time when I turn the key I get a click, and it will usually catch on the 2nd or 3rd try, hot or cold. I put a brand new 1000 cold crank marine battery in it, and just had the starter rebuilt by a local rebuild shop, who said it wasn't too bad, and they replaced the epoxyed in cellenoid....still does the same thing with the rebuilt starter. I also just checked the ignition switch terminals and cleaned & tightened them up. All connections appear clean and tight.

I'm lost :confused:, and not great with diagnosing electrical problems.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

starter or battery, it seems like the common problem, Are you sure the battery is pushing some good amps?

how confident are you on the starter rebuild? This is one of thos problems that might not appear on a bench test of the starter. Is it possible they did not correct the earlier problem?

Don, I think you are correct. The clicking is coming from both the circuit breaker and slave cellenoid, so i think it is one of them. Thank you for the electrical diagram & instructions...

I'm certain the battery and starter are A1, as well as all connections. I even cleaned all the connections on the ignition switch, circuit breaker and slave cellenoid, as well as starter & battery posts.

I'll let you know how I make out.

Thanks everyone!!

Circuit breakers don't click, so it's probably the Solenoid that sets next to it.

Re: '89 Mercruiser 4.3 click, click, click

Don, what is strange is I put my finger on the circuit breaker and with a helper clicking the ignition switch could feel the clicking inside, in both the circuit breaker and cellenoid that sits next to it.

My 1st thought was to bypass the circuit breaker temporaily and see if it still had the problem.

I am going to go buy a 12v tester though and see what i can figure out from the link you gave me.

I sincerely appreciate your help!!

I have a starting stumper.. I have an 88 Mercruiser 4.3LX I replaced the starter and now the starter engages the fly wheel but the engine will not turn ? I tried a booster pac with full charge, to make sure the battery wasn't the issue, I turned the engine over by hand while watching the fly wheel turn to make sure that it wasn't seezed and now I'm out of answers does any one have anything I can try next...... I'm lost.

Best to start a new thread with your question. Not at the end of someone elses question that is a year old.
