New here picked up a super clean basement kept 35th anniversary Norris craft 1750xlvee with a merc xr4 on it and needs a little maintenance I can’t seem to figure out.
Did water pump and carbs. Ran good but not great so threw new plugs and it and now runs like a champ. Live well is missing some valve I’m told so have to figure that out. Other then that she’s water ready but streeing is tough. I could feel it binding so took it apart and this must be common as seen others posting boat works but steering is stiff. The shaft has no bushings or bearings and is riding on the aluminum sleeve in the upper and middle areas. The hub on the dash has been messed with it’s reclocked or changed.
This is really the last thing to make it super nice so willing to do this right vrs to keep using as is and keep destroying what’s left. I have tried to look it up and zip so far to turning to guys that know a lot more on this then me. I’m a master mechanic I drag race tune gm latemodels for a living. Did transmissions 25 years. So extremely handy was considering machining and adding bearings but maybe something I can buy is out there and fix it as it should be.
Thanks guys
oh and I grabbed this for 500 bucks so way up. Like to get something that can hold more people and fish ski so I want this all nice ready for someone that wants to just fish and have a nice setup. Will use it a season get out on the lake here in dandridge then offer it for trade for another boat. Let someone enjoy the fishing side of it more then I will so want this perfect if possible.

Thanks for reply. So the helm was slap worn out and it was missing the bushings that centered the shaft on it. It’s all Mercury parts and was available on eBay. Finished it today and now steering is free as it should be and steering wheel back in place.
