Nah it is not the cat, that would be a waste of money. Take it to a different mechanic instead of the muffler shoppe.

The mechanic that diagnosed it wont put a cat on it ? Some mechanic , like I said get a new mechanic.

It sounds like your mechanic has no idea what the problem is and is going to replace everything one piece at a time till it runs right. Thats the way some mechanics work these days. It sounds like a short to me. When he did the injectors it could have moved a wire so it was not grounding and after a bit it shorted out again. I would inspect the injector wiring very closely. By accident I found out injectors can be rebuilt for 1/4 the price of a new set when I rebuilt the engine in my ranger.

Re: 89 olds cutlass supreme update

Ok the muffler shop said the cat is bad but that is not causing the problem. The fuel pump is running low PSI but that is also not causing the problem. I said before the 6 fuel injectors were replaced and that i can unplug the fuse to 3 of the fuel injectors and the car will run on just 3 cylinders. I can only pull the fuse for bank 1 (3 cylinders) and not bank 2 (the other 3 cylinders) If it was the fuel pump alone then it would not matter which bank i pulled the fuse from. There seems to be a problem with the "inj" fuse bank. I think It might be a ground somewhere. Or the ECU. If it was a fuel problem then I would think that it would not matter which of the 3 cylinders that I disconnected. If I unplug one fuse it will run and if I pull the other and replace the first it will not. Its really hard to explain. Im going to replace the fuel pump though just to eliminate that as a part of the problem. I have the fuel pump and the screen and I will replace them in the morning! Can anyone help me with some other advice about this problem? THANKS!!!!!!!!!

I would get the electrical drawings and start checking the wires. Or go to the auto wreckers and get a new injector harness and try it. If you have a pick your part there that might be a cheap way to go. Grab a crank sensor while you are there.

At least check your wiring going to the crank sensor

When you say the "injector harness" what do you mean? You saw that I had the injectors replaced, so do you mean the connectors that connect to the fuel injectors? Im going to replace the fuel pump even though I know that is not the problem because it is in that one bank of the fuel injectors. The underbody is pretty rusty so I don't know if that would cause a problem with a ground or not. I have the Haynes manual for the car and it has some electrical drawings in there that I might be able to trace. THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, dolluper, how do I check this crank sensor? I see its location is, Under hood, center, rear engine area, passenger side of exhaust pipe, above oil pan, mounted in engine block. So how do I check it and what do I need to be looking for? Also why would this be the problem? Im not doubting you at all Im just looking for some knowledge of this sensor. THANKS TO YOU AS WELL!!

If your crank sensor is bad or a short in the wiring the computer will not recieve the signal in turn shutting down some or all the injectors....some CS's are baked in and need to be sprayed with carb cleaner or such to loosen ...then they may break ....heat a dry wall screw and put in to remove it but don't jerk it from side to side pull out straight...I bet yours is all cracked up by now so considerate broken....only 15 bones to replace plus your labour and frustration
