Dwell moves when revving the engine - worn distributor gear excessive play I was told.

Will this cause the oil pressure to drop as well since the distributor drives the oil pump?

My boat ran like crap until I changed the timing to 8* then it woke up and ran really awesome but that was only once and nearing the end of that test run started to run like crap again. The next time I took it out it was doing the same thing and not letting me past 3200 RPMS. I have checked all the other things related to the limited RPM issue and everything has checked out fine except the issue I have with the dwell moving when giving it throttle.

I ordered http://www.amazon.com/Pertronix-D20...1342305482&sr=8-1&keywords=marine+distributor

so it should replace my points completely and I think I have a blaster 2 coil on the boat right now I think that will work with this.

I am now getting a lower than I like reading on my oil pressure and some tapping in the engine somewhere at idle and while trying to run it wide open. I took it as easy as I could possibly have during this test run so I didn't make the damage if any more extensive.

I open to any suggestions but I am hoping that its just the distributor not holding it at 8* where i set it last time.

accelerating in driveway there is a distinctive hollow knock, man I think this motor may have seen better day even though it was supposed to be a fresh rebuild when I bought the boat. I'm thinking possible rod bearing.

I will probably end up pulling the motor and send it to a machine shop and build it myself I guess.
