Re: 89 Starcraft Mariner 210 CC Rebuild

Hello. I joined iBoats just for this thread. I have this same boat and redid the transom and deck 2 years ago this month.

I used Marine Plywood for the transom, 3/4 and glued the two pieces together using West System and one of their fillers. I also screwed the pieces together to make the 1.5" thickness. I used exterior grade plywood from a lumber yard for the deck and wish I would have used it for the transom as well due to its lower cost, yet almost same quality. I bypassed the HD and Lowes plywood as my local lumber yard sells a higher grade at a lower price. There was very litt difference between the marine and exterior grades. I only found two small voids (very, very small) in the exterior grade. The 3/4 marine was $84 while the 1/2 exterior was $24. I sealed everything with several costs of West system epoxy resin.

I riveted the flooring in place then covered with Nautolex using exterior porch cement. It's holding up very well. The downside to porch cement (for carpeting) is it's thick and must be troweled. Use a heavy J Roller to smooth it out. I would rather of used 3M aerosole but could not find it in a waterproof version. I am in an area where aluminum is a rarity so could not find anyone to put the heavy cherry or mushroom rivets in at the motor well. I used poprivets from a local military surplus store near my home. They are holding up very well.

In retrospect I wish I would have gotten a taller console to replace the stock one. I could not find one cheap enough until after I finished the boat. Too late then as the steering cable and other wiring was run.

I did not remove the old foam, but let it dry out for 6 weeks with a fan blowing on it. (It had filled with water while sitting at my parents place)

If you would like me to email you photo's of the process send me your email addy.

One thing I forgot to mention was in gluing to 3/4 pieces together for the transom, I had a lot of sanding with a belt sander to get it to fit in place. I did not go with a 3 piece transom as Starcraft did but one single piece. That's how my transom rotted in the first place. They do not seal wood except with a product similar to Thompsons, and water colleted at the unsealed seems. My last time out, the engine broke the keel brace. No problem as a friend is a welder at the local shipyard and welded in a heavy piece of billet. I bought a 1/4 shet of aluminum to place in the transom but didn't use it. trying to fit 3/4" wood and 1/4 " aluminum wasn't adding up without adding in a 1/2" plywood or doubling the aluminum plus a 1.4" of wood. Too much to make that happen. With the grade of wood I used and sealing it with West, it will outlast me any way.

Let me know how I can aid you.

NB the console doesnt really look to tall to me ( if you are going to be standing most of the time you are driving ) . I think it actually looks more suited to standing behind with the controls higher up so you are not reaching down to control the boat . Maybe a picture of you standing behind the console would help more in seeing if it is actualy to tall :D.

NB..I like it. Still enough room to scoot around each side.
Nice T-Tops over head would be sharp.

OK, we're on another marathon at work collecting as much stimulus money :) as possible so I haven't been able to do anything on the boat.

That doesn't stop me from cruising ebay and CL every morning at 3:30 while I'm drinking my coffee. I managed to pick this up for pretty cheap yesterday.

That's gonna do the trick!

North Beach, I like it!

I'm still undecided as to what my interior will be, but I'd like a center console.
I'm very interested in seeing what's below deck as far as how the cables and steering was routed.

I'm very familiar with fiberglass boats and chase tubes installed befow deck. That's what I'm thinking is in your boat.

As I've noticed with all the SC boats, they put as much weight forward as posible. My plans are for an 18 gallon gas tank contained in the console. I'll probably build it.

That leaning post will tie the whole rig together NB:) Lotsa cushion for ya when you're zippin around in 3-4 footers chasing fish all over.

So...you are keeping the taller console...right?:D

I will be following your restoration closely, as I am planning to take on a restoration of the same boat. I have yet to pull up my floor, and from what I see others going through... I'm scared! I consider myself mechanically talented, but I am no machinist. Once the weather clears up a bit in Jersey, I'll try to get started myself. I did some light restoration on a 14' grumman open, but it was already in decent shape and WAY smaller than this sucker. Hope you don't mind if I pick your brains for the experiences you have. Best of luck to you!

Re: 89 Starcraft Mariner 210 CC Rebuild

Wow, I didn't realize folks were still posting on this thread! As some of you know, we got hammered at work with a couple fast paced projects and practically lived in DC from the 1st of November till mid January so no time to work on the boat.

I have, however continued my planning and scheming:D

I'm still on the fence as to which console to use-the big honkin one or the smaller stock version with an adapter of some sort to raise it about 10 inches. I will say the bigger one is in way better shape and the stock console would require me becoming a fiberglass expert due to repairs needed.

In any case, I've been pouring over ebay the last couple of months looking for Goodies and a couple days ago I snagged this.

Mariner9-1.jpg

The 150 Suzuki I bought a few months ago has side mount controls and we'll be needing this top mount binnacle. It has tilt and trim buttons so this was a great find.

I'm also looking at mid eighties Suzuki kickers so we don't mix and match stuff hanging off of the stern:)

As soon as this big snow storm is over, we're gonna start yanking the floor out and things will get real crazy.

Stay tuned!!

Petey, welcome to iBoats!!!!!

jspano, my 18' is rated for 150 if you can believe that and it moves great with a 90.

Re: 89 Starcraft Mariner 210 CC Rebuild

Love the looks of the double throttle binnacle:D

Are you gonna use the portside throttle for the big 150 and the starboard for the kicker?

You've got me wanting to find a 9.8 Merc to match my 80hp now:cool:(since I'd probably be advised not to paint my 5.5 Johnson black:D)

Re: 89 Starcraft Mariner 210 CC Rebuild

JS, mine's rated for 140 also, but I got a really good deal on the 150 so I'm gonna cheat a little:eek:

HA, I'm either gonna use it for the kicker or just set it up for one handle shifter and one handle throttle.

Re: 89 Starcraft Mariner 210 CC Rebuild

Well I can't work on it so I might as well show up every couple of days and tells some lies:D

Over the weekend we got 31" of the white fun stuff. Last night and today it was another 11 or 12. Geez!!! I have a 450 Honda atv with a snow plow and a huge driveway to deal with so I've been a tad busy.

I've made the decision based upon you folk's comments to go with the big console. After many hours surfing the internet I realized that on the Sea Hunt Saltwater boats that this console came off of the console rides high and I'm kinda digging the look!!! Besides, the big console is really so nice with lots of storage space, cup holders, cubby holes, glove box, and has a fairly new steering setup WITH cables that I can use.

The cons of this console are the fact that it's missing the big honkin door and it needs a windshield and grab bars. The folks at Sea Hunt want $470.00 for just the door, so it looks like I'm gonna have to Mcguyver a door, windshield, and some grab bars for this thing.

In leiu of the grab bars, I'm considering beginning the search for a used t top that I can adapt to fit this setup. So if anyone comes across a cheapo out there let me know.

We are set to begin this project as soon as I can start moving stuff around again.

Re: 89 Starcraft Mariner 210 CC Rebuild

totally new to the site and felt i should share some ideas.

i would of kept the smaller console but thats just me, we fish out of a 23 whaler and the console leaves like 1.5ft but we wish we still had his 21 pursuit because of room

but its your boat and so on so go for it

as for the t top, do yourself a favor before you decide on one and google salt shaker boats and check out how they have em coming off the tops of gunwales(?)
