898-Merc 1 exhaust flappers?

They have been rattling. This is a '78 boat and they are probably original. Now that the motor is out it is time to deal with them. Should we just pull them or replace them. We just don't want them to break loose and get stuck in the exhaust passage. My OMC does not have them and after 34 years there has never been a problem.

Looking at the Merc setup, water would have to travel up further to get into the manifold than it would in my OMC.

I understand that beaching, w/ outdrive up, is the worst case scenario and that will never happen here as the boat is always moored off shore with the bow out.

All that being said, these flappers are at the bottom of the Y pipe. Later Mercs placed them at the top of the Y pipe for easier access. Could you move them up in the original Y pipe? Or would a later Y pipe fit this setup.

Lastly, approximately how much do original flappers cost and is there any more to replacing them than removing each half of the Y pipe at the bottom yoke?
