Need help please. I tested my Bayliner with 89HP Force Outboard last weekend in the lake. The engine runs well, but when increasing the power to forward, the engine stops after about 5 to 10 seconds running. I was thinking spur plugs. Can you help please. I just change the lower unit with a used and working one. Thanks

What year and I don't believe Force made 89 HP motors. 85 HP maybe? Anyways, it sounds like it is starving on fuel.

Sorry Jiggz. Its a typo. That is 85HP 1989 model. I have gas still almost half tank. When the engine stops on high gear I put back the throttle on neutral and the motor starts again. Only when accelerating higher the motor stops after about 5 seconds.

Get a G2 clear fuel filter from Wally World (less than $5) and install it between the fuel pump outlet and the carbs' inlet. Run the motor with the cowl off and watch the clear fuel filter making sure it doesn't get empty. if it does then it means there is fuel delivery problem, i.e. faulty fuel pump, leaking fuel hoses or clogged fuel tank vent.

If the clear fuel filter stays at least half full while running, then the problem is with the carbs' floats.

You can also pull the hose off the fuel pump and have someone turn the motor over.
It should push fuel from the fitting on the pump.
The carbs might need cleaning? something clogging the main jets.

Thanks Jiggz. I will order the fuel filter and install this weekend. Not sure the size if the 3/8 inch will fit or is that more?

The G2 has 5/16 hose connections which makes it good fit for both 1/4" and 3/8" hoses.

Most Forces used 1/4" hose for the fuel system.
Make sure the filter goes after the pump between that and the carb.

I was trying to locate the fuel filter from inside the motor and cant find it, is it located near the fuel tank or outside the motor?

The built in fuel filter on this motor is located at the top of the fuel pump. And it is nothing but a fine screen mesh. It is held by a single screw.

The screen in the fuel pump isn't real good at catching the parts that get in the tank.
That's why we suggest a different one between the carb and the pump.

Bayliner didn't put a filter in their system until Mercury started using their parts.

When I got my boat in 88 the first thing I added was a water/fuel separating filter.
That goes between the tank and the fuel pump.
Mount it somewhere it's not in the way but still accessible.
I also removed any inline connectors on the fuel lines.
The connectors have a seal that can go bad and allow the motor to suck air ..

Yep. There is no clear fuel filter on my Force outboard. Its only a fine screen with a screw.

That's why we recommended an inline filter between the carb and the pump.
That screen catches big particles but what can get through will clog the carb.
Fram G-2 3 or 12 all under 5$
Most can be had at WallyWorld

You figure out the problem?
Have someone squeezing the ball as you accelerate.
If that helps then the pump probably needs a rebuild.

Thanks Jerry. I will try to put the inline filter between the fuel pump and the carb. I want to make sure if the fuel pump is the one that has a screw containing the fine filter as shown in the pix?

Yes what??

Yes that's the fuel pump behind the filter.
Real easy to rebuild.
Does the squeeze ball pump up and get hard?
Yes? then the pump is probably ok.
No? then the diaphragm might be torn or has a hole, or the float in the carb is sticking, or the squeezie is bad.

HI Jerry, can I put the G3 clear fuel filter between the Fuel Tank and the Pump? One of the response above said between the tank and carb. I think between the tank and pump is better? Thanks

Between the carb/ pump is best.
Under the hood, it's not out somewhere that it can get crushed or knocked loose.

If you want a filter by the tank? install a water/gas separating filter.
That one gets excess water out of the system.
The other catches fine particles before it goes into the carb.

Yes what??

Yes that's the fuel pump behind the filter.

l posted yes to the question as posted.

He was just looking for confirmation anyway

it was just a yes/no answer,
if no, further information would have been given

l have a tendency to waffle on at times,

Thought l'd try something different
