Hello. I have a 1979 Mariner 8hp outboard with a bad impeller, I think. It overheats after a short while. I can't seem to get the lower unit off. I purchased the shop manual and followed all the directions to no avail. The lower unit drops down apx. a 1/2", but thats all. Please help. Thanks, chris

Sounds like you are forgetting to loosen the shifting rod to the lower unit. On my engins they want you to put the engine in forward which will drop the lower unit another 1/2 or so you sould see a clamp which connects the shifting rod together. Thats all I can add good luck

Shawn

I have popped the plastic cap and loosened the clamp. The unit will still not come off. Thanks

The clamp may have a grove on it to except the tightening screw. Try removing the screw completly and remove the whole clamp. you'll find this setup on omc and mercury. Never done a mariner yet. Good Luck

Shawn
