9.5 1969 johnson jumps out of gear at high spead

Hello i have a 9.5 and it jumps out of gear at high speeds. I have taken the lower unit apart and the gears look good could it be the dog in the lower unit. And would this cause it to loose power. Thanks very much.

Sounds like a worn clutch dog. Check the recess it fits into on the gear(s) as well. Even slight wear on a clutch dog can make it jump out of gear on this engine. Can sometimes be an incorrect shift linkage adjustment.
