9.5 Carb removal

Well, after quite awhile lurking I figured it was time for me to join up and start contributing hopefully. I recently aquired a nice little 12' aluminum deep v with a 1970 9.5 hp Johnson. The previous owner gave me a list of reciepts of work that was done last year including water pump change, carb adjustment, and a new thermostat. So I have had this motor running, however not for long. I think it has been plagued by bad gas (the tank has since been emptied and filled with fresh gas/oil). I have been able to pull the top part of the carb off multiple times now to clean the float/needle/throttle/etc. but for the life of me cannot get the lower section off the manifold due to one screw that lies underneath the throttle armature that lies underneath the flywheel. Am I missing something here? It doesn't seem like I should have to remove the flywheel assembly to get to this one screw. Twisting the throttle on the tiller shows enough screw that I can get it loosened, but not enough to get the screw out of the carb body to get it off the engine. Sorry for the long post, can anyone help?

Re: 9.5 Carb removal

Put the outboard in gear and move the throttle all the way to full throttle.

This should reveal the screw enough to get it out.

It is that simple. I couldn't figure it out either till FR told me. Best of luck. Rick.

Re: 9.5 Carb removal

Does it make a difference if the motor is in gear or not? Because I was able to get the screw loosened by going "full throttle" in neutral but the throttle plate didn't get out of the way enough to get the screw out. Thank you again in advance for all your help.
