Re: 9.5 evinrude has spark and gas, won't start

TrueNorthist is right. Came out this morning, tilted the motor so any gas lying in the cylinders could run out exhaust port, pulled out choke
and cranked it. No action on 1st pull. Put choke in, pulled again and it sputtered into life and kept running. Apparently I have been consistently over-choking it . Also, the way the motor was sitting allowed excess gas in top of cylinders to stay there between bouts.

Sorry for the wild goose chase and thanks to all for your help!

Except that your OP describes this as a change after some months of no problems....i.e. your starting procedure worked.
If your motor starts effectively with no choke after sitting o/n, sounds like you have an over-rich situation.

Does it idle OK?

Yes, my former starting procedure worked fine and definitely involved leaving choke on if it didnt start 1st pull.

This morning the motor did cut out at low idle twice but I assumed it wasn't warmed up enough.

The low idle air screw is backed out 1 1/2 turns from lightly closed. I did try different settings on this when I was trying to start it but settled on this as best bet. Should it be leaned out more by turning in? Also I tried various settings on that knob on the side of tiller shaft and I need to revisit this. I am running new Champion J4C plugs gapped .030.

Good to see you got er runnin! Hopefully it's down to just minor adjustments now. I believe 1 1/2 is a good starting point for that motor but maybe someone will weigh in to confirm? There are posts describing idle mixture in here so just search around a bit. You might consider getting a new head gasket. Also be sure to re-torque the head bolts after a heat cycle.

J8C (Champion) plugs are indicated for that motor.

Never wrote it down but if I remember right with my 73 I had the slow speed open over two turns in the end. Ran real nice at that. Rick.

Re: 9.5 evinrude has spark and gas, won't start

Still having trouble with this @#$%^&* motor. It started this morning on 1st pull with the choke out. Pushed choke in, left throttle at start position (fast idle) and it ran for 5 minutes then stopped. Wouldn't restart. Same thing happened yesterday. Plugs looked a bit black, but no excess gas in hole threads. Any ideas? Low idle needle was at 1 1/2 turns out.

One thing I noticed yesterday when checking timing/synch was that the throttle plate was only open about 1/5 way at highest speed setting on tiller handle. Linkage arm was at end of travel and didnt allow any further movement up cam to open it wider. Seemed to rev up fine tho when it was working right

Oops. I was wrong on the 2nd issue. I now see that the gearshift mechanism has a post which prevents hi revs when in neutral. When you put it in forward you get full travel and the throttle plate opens all the way... Sorry

Re: 9.5 evinrude has spark and gas, won't start

I think I got it at last. After rereading above posts and then reading posts by P Lawson and D Spencer in http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=573741, I realized that it was definitely running too rich and accumulating gas in bottom cylinder. It took about 5 minutes running for it to acquire enough gas to drown the spark and stop. Noticed also gas coming from carb. Removed carb again and saw very stiff action of float on the plastic pin which acts as hingepin. Removed this and gently sanded it to smaller diameter so float swung easily, put it back together and tried it. Started right up and ran fine for 15 minutes before I shut it off. Restarted easily. No gas coming from carb. So, hopefully things are ok now. I'd like to know whose bright idea it was to make those pins from plastic rather than brass? Anyway, many thanks to all for your help!

The float on my '66 9.5 used to stick from time to time so I made a rack to store all my outboards upright.
