I have a 9922SS 9.5 Evinrude leaking lower end lube out of the small hole on the bottomside of the fin around the lower end. Where do I start?

For starters you can wipe up the mess as it's most likely unburnt fuel/oil mix from powerhead. I say no worries. Do check the lower unit gear oil to reassure yourself, you may find water leaking into the gearbox but not gear oil leaking out. Chief Chief

Last year, mine was exactly the same, small track of gearlube coming from the fin area above the lower gearcase.

But you say, how does oil defeat gravity while it is sitting there?

Well oil floats on water, so you get water in the lower and the oil level rises until it weeps out of the hole. I pulled the lower drain plug expecting oil to trickle out into my drain pan, but instead i got a stream of water shoot 2 feet across the garage floor!!

So, off with the lower and in with a Sierra after market seal kit, did the trick just fine. Make sure you get the correct kit, they changed in 1967. The earlier kit has 1" diameter steel outer seals (2), the later models have regular rubber coated oil seals which are a little larger diameter, like 1 1/8" I think.

It may be a simpler fix than all that, but I'd like a better description, or picture of exactly where it's leaking out first.

Do you have water in the LU - have you pulled the plug and taken a sampling yet?
