Hey Bill!.....need some history on the engine. Is it new to you? Did this problem just start? Have you had the lower unit off? Stuff like that...... :)

Sounds to me like the connection in the lower unit needs to be adjusted, I just had my lower unit off a month ago and when I put it back togeather and ran it I had the same problem, it can be a pain to fix, but you will see a big difference in how it shifts. Let me know if you need details on adjusting it.

Re: 9.5 EVINRUDE pops out of gear

Couple things to check...

That motor has a spring tab in the lower unit that rides on detents in the shift rod. I've seen some where the spring's retainer screw loosens and allows the shift rod to move of it's own accord, or sometimes it can bend back a bit and puts less pressure on the shift rod. Could also be the detents are rounding over a bit, allowing it to move more freely. The spring is located inside the gearcase bullet, towards the rear. Opening it up is the only way to see. If the shift rod moves without a noticeable ka-chunk between gear positions, then this is probably the cause.

The other thing to check is the shift clutch dog. These wear over time and can cause the problem you describe. The cogs on the clutch crown over and slip out of the mating cogs on the gears. Lots of posts here on iBoats about shifter dogs...

Good luck!
