Couple things to check...<br /><br />That motor has a spring tab in the lower unit that rides on detents in the shift rod. I've seen some where the spring's retainer screw loosens and allows the shift rod to move of it's own accord, or sometimes it can bend back a bit and puts less pressure on the shift rod. Could also be the detents are rounding over a bit, allowing it to move more freely. The spring is located inside the gearcase bullet, towards the rear. Opening it up is the only way to see. If the shift rod moves without a noticeable ka-chunk between gear positions, then this is probably the cause.<br /><br />The other thing to check is the shift clutch dog. These wear over time and can cause the problem you describe. The cogs on the clutch crown over and slip out of the mating cogs on the gears.
