I have a 1971 9.5hp Evinrude Sportwin, I have seen the postings about boysen reeds? Does my motor have reeds? Does boysen or any other aftermarket company make reeds for my motor that would give me better performance? Any info you guys have would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks..............

Chris, You don't have reeds, If you wan't better performance you need to improve the 70 - 75 psi compression it has. Rebuild it ;)

MCM: All outboard engines of note have reed's. I am not certain if Boyesen makes reed's for the 9.5. If they do, the improvement you could mostly expect would be in idle quality. You could check with there web site.

My bad RJ, I see a leaf plate in the intake diagram is that the same? Either way the performance of this motor isn't going to improve much until those comp #'s are improved, IMO :p

I just checked there web site and I don't see them for this motor, would NEW factory ones make any difference, or are there other manufactures that make reeds that might give me some benifit?

Thanks........

Chris, I suspect you'll see a noticeable improvement in the motor after the rebuild, at least as far as a 9.5 is concerned ;)

Re: 9.5 Evinrude reeds?

Hey MCM, I wanted to tell you that when I took it in the mechanic tried to talk me out of a rebuild, he said he has never seen one of these 9.5's with over 80psi even when they were new, but after everyone on the board told me I should rebuild I told him to do it anyway, I will post the new comp. when I get the motor back.

Didn't mean that at all Chris, I just meant there's only so much you can expect to get out of a smaller motor that's all ;)

A reed problem with these small engines is rare, I would'nt worry about replacement. As far as a power increase, I'm afraid your stuck with a 9.5. When the mechanic has that engine all apart, have him check the motor mount's, that was a problem with these engines.
