Hey guys, how do you know if its time to change a head gasket? Will there be signs? What are the benifits, if any to changing it just because its 34 years old.

Thanks,

If you have low compression (less than 80 psi) in either or both cylinders, change it. Otherwise leave it be.

Good luck. :)

No benefits at all. Usually a head gasket will go if the engine is overheated. Sometimes (rarely) it just "happens", but I don't think it's predictable in any way.
Best to leave well enough alone. Unless you really want to have a peek in there.
EDIT: Beaten to the punch!

Maybe change it now.Because of it's age,if it's available.I'd hate to be looking for another in 30 more years.

DHP

I thought this was in being rebuilt, a new head gasket should have been part of the deal :)
