Hi,

I just picked up an old Johnson 9.5 hp outboard (1970) and have started working with it.

I'm totally new to this stuff so I hope I can get the terms right.

First off, it looks like it is brand new. Got it from my father in law who rarely used it.

But the cord you pull to start it won't retract. You have to take the cover off and rewiind the cord by hand. Also, it looks like the gear teeth on the column that the cord wraps around are worn down.

Is there a spring broken somewhere that I can get to that would make the cord retract by itself again? Any ideas on how to fix, or what is wrong?

Thanks for any help!

Mark

Ahoy, Apexfisherman.

The recoil spring may be broken or it may have slipped out of it's holding slot.

I suggest you get a manual for guidance, as it can be dangerous to service recoil starters without one. That spring is like a cobra if loosed accidentally.

Good luck. :)

Hi JB,

Thanks for the cautionary tale! I have a repair manual on order, but thought I'd try here to see if it was an easy fix.

If the spring is broken is it an easily found part?

Thanks,

Mark

i have 2 of these motors and a bucket of parts you can get most of the parts new but they stopped making a few. ebay is a good place to look. or just look for a parts motor they really come in handy

Thanks DJohns,

I appreciate all the help. I ordered my manual today so will wait for that to arrive before screwing something up or losing a finger!

Take care...I'll post back here with results when I get the job done.

Mark

take of the ropepull handle, and put the rope into position. pull. if it rewind, you or your father in law just forgot to put it into position last time you did it. if it dont you have to replace the spring
