9.5 HP Johnson/Evinrude design changes?

I understand that the 1964 9.5's used a different motor mount or vibration control than the 1965 to 1973 model years. Were there any other "improvements" made to the 9.5HP model line from 1964 to 1973?

I also have heard these motors are prone to exhaust leaks, noted from my previous topic on these motors. Practically, how much of a problem is this? There seem to be a lot of them around, still running.

Are there any other particular flaws in these models?

Thanks,

Bump-it-up, Bump-it-up, Bump-it-up, up, up.

I guess what I am really asking is, is there any particular model year(s) of the OMC 9.5HP that would be more desireable because of something in the design?

Thanks,

The lower unit changed I think around '68 to a somewhat more durable design with less drag. My '69 has been great & the exhaust gasket never failed. I did develop an exhaust leak after cracking the clamshell housing by drifting into a submerged rock (anchor pulled loose & hit the rock drifting stern first; was anchored from bow in current) I have heard others complain about the lower units being weak in earlier year models.

The first model, 1964, used springs for vibration dampeners. Later years ran smoother because they used brake pad material to act as dampener.

Was the carburator upgraded at the 1964/1965 model year change or later?

I'm thinking these were pretty decent outboards, a ten year production run and a lot of survivors after 30 to 40 years must account for something.

Anything else ? ? ? ? ?
