9.5 HP Johnson Remote Setup

First time poster here, I've been viewing this site for the last few months as I have been rebuilding a 1960 Bellboy 14'. The site has been great...thanks for all the info!

The boat currently has a 35 HP Johnson, but I recently purchased a 9.5 HP Johnson to use on Utah's high country lakes (its a requirement to be under 10 HP).

So here's my question: The 9.5 has a tiller. Can I change it to remote operation (keeping the pull start) and, can I use my existing cables on my steering system?

I understand that I may be looking for trouble when I reinstall my 35 HP, but this motor may be too big to use as a "kicker" on this small boat.

From what I've seen thus far the remote steer kits for the 9.5 are extremely rare. Best bet might be to search for Johnson / Evinrude 9.5 stuff on this forum and look for a list of companies that have a boneyard of older engines and then start calling around - I don't have a link to the exact post that has this list but I know it is on here somewhere.

Otherwise you can always improvise something if you have fabrication skills; my 9.5 owners manual has a crude sketch of the remote steer kit that I can scan.

thanks for the reply. i have fabrication experience and feel good about making my own set up. if you could scan and email me the lay out, that would be great!

will i have any issues installing the throttle/gear shift to the motor?

The crude sketch I have has a drawing of a remote shift adapter that looks pretty easy to make but it doesn't have anything for the throttle.

I've been looking at a way to do a remote throttle on mine but thus far nothing has made sense, maybe when my ebay parts get here and I can mock a few things up a home brew setup will become clear.

If I remember I'll scan the drawing and shoot to ya tomorrow.

The remote control and steering kit for the 9.5 is
Part # 171879 ? that includes the shift lever, throttle rod, and steering arm. Check with sea-way.com

There is also a top mount throttle control kit - part # 171796.

If you want the steering connector for rope or cable, it's part # 377440.
