Hey all ,my 69 Evinrude sportwin doesn't run correctly, replaced, coils, points, condensers, wires, head gasket, plugs, carburetor cleaned rebuilt, water pump,it will not idle properly,sneezes/puddering,no adjustment to the low speed needle makes any difference,I'm completely stumped, could the base gasket be leaking and cause that?or a leaky intake gasket, the upper crankcase seal doesn't leak,I checked it, noticed the bottom plug is black, the top plug is relativity normal looking, any advice would be awesome!

Does spark jump a gap of 5/16" ( 8 mm ) on both leads ?----Checked / replaced fuel pump diaphragm ?-----Thermostat working and not stuck open ?----Adjusting the low soeed needle must make a difference.----If it does not then that suggests an issue with the carburetor !!

Spending a lot of beer tokens.-----Have you checked the reed valves / crankcase compression ??

Yes crankcase compression is about 65# on Ea cylinder, far as the reed valves I looked at them they all appear to be completely closed I'm not sure exactly what I'm supposed to be looking at, from what I understand they should be closed and no light should come through them correct? Yes I spent quite a bit of money on this motor so far to no avail

Cylinder compression and crankcase compression are 2 different things.-----It is impossible to have 65# compression in the crankcase !!

Does it run with the hood off? If so it’s your shift boot. It’s breathing it’s own exhaust.
