Hey guys! I took the lower unit off of my 1969 9.5 hp Johnson seahorse and did all of the necessary work but now when I try to put it back on, the shifting rod does not want to go up into the little metal jacket thing with the screw in it. If I push to hard then the shifting rod gets pushed back into neutral. Then I've tried putting a screw driver in the space in the metal jacket thing to make the gap where the rod goes bigger for it to slide in but it still doesn't want to go. What am I doing wrong? Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks!

Welcome to Iboats, BTF112989!

First, do you have one of the bolts completely out of the coupler? The bolt needs to be installed *after* the shift rod is inserted.

Sometimes they're a little tight anyway. Open it up as best you can. Grease the shift rod. Shimmy and tap it in as best you can.

Re: 9.5 Johnson Lower Unit reassembly

Thanks guys. I just took the lower unit off then opened up the metal thing as much as I couldthen put the lower unit back on and eased it up in there. But now my reverse gear can't rev past the start position on the twist grip throttle and my neutral can go all the way to fast on the throttle. Did I push it too hard and it got knocked down? What did I do?

Yes it sounds like you pushed it in a bit too deep. You will have to take off all the bolts again and remove the screw from the shift rod connector.lower the unit and make sure that the connector is snug enough so the rod slides in but no looser.Use a flashlight while you do this ,so you can see when the little ball on the rod is past the screw hole.Put the screw in and tighten it just a bit.The screw should fit in without a fight. Now pull a bit on the lower unit.(not very hard)This wil put the screw exactly where it is supposed to be.Now check to make sure that your water pipe is in the waterpump outlet.Tighten up the shift rod connector screw and button it up.Good luck.
