Sat in storage for awhile---
about 4 years ago replaced fuel pump with 18-7350 Sierra Fuel Pump, all fuel lines, tank and plugs, blew out carb, new impeller. Tried to start it recently for the first time since i put in new parts and it would run only about 2 mins with the throttle set to start position. Fuel filter glass bowl kept emptying out, so retightened all clamps/hoses. Now appears to stay full, but still stalls unless I keep pumpin primer.... I also took apart the fuel pump earlier in year, it was a pain puttin back together and not pos't I put back together right...so obvi first response will be to replace it or check it which i'll do tomorrow...is the 18-7350 sierra pump the correct one to use, see link on iboats.com for pump page fuel pumps johnson 9.5. Also, what is the correct setting for low speed throttle needle from all the way closed (from the right), i messed with it a lil (its not closed right now just a lil off canter). Also engine runs rougher when cover is on...possibilities?? Thanks a lot, Ryan Aldrich

You say that the engine runs okay as long as you pump the fuel rpimer bulb. That indicates that the fuel pump is faulty.

(Carburetor Adjustment - Single S/S Adjustable Needle Valve)
(J. Reeves)

Initial setting is: Slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Start engine and set the rpms to where it just stays running. In segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the S/S needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running.

Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

Note: As a final double check setting of the slow speed valve(s), if the engine has more than one carburetor, do not attempt to gradually adjust all of the valves/carburetors at the same time. Do one at a time until you hit the above response (die out or spit back), then go on to the next valve/carburetor. It may be necessary to back out "all" of the slow speed adjustable needle valves 1/8 turn before doing this final adjustment due to the fact that one of the valves might be initially set ever so slightly lean.

When you have finished the above adjustment, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.

it sound like either the pump is not working, the carbs are gummed up. and running rougher with the cover on, points the the seal to the exhaust housing. letting exhaust into the engine chamber, they don't like breathing their own exhaust. get it running correctly with out the cover, the worry about the rest.

So i rebuilt fuel pump

So i rebuilt fuel pump

Thanks for the replies...turns out when I org. took apart pump, I put it back together backwards, so fuel was trying to be pumped out the intake...found this out by setting up a gravity feed direct to carb and putting either end of fuel pump hose into bottle of fuel...so i took the pump apart, learned a lot about diaphraghm fuel pumps, rebuilt, and now it pumps correctly. I have not adjusted yet the slow speed needle (it's still coughing) but that is tomorrow. ---------I still have the problem of running rough with the cover on, and it was mentioned that the exhaust seal was the problem??? What is best way to correct this issue... Again thanks for the replies!....one puddle closer to actually gettin this thing on the shenandoah!
