My motor doesn`t seem to be performing that well. Things done- new plugs, completely cleaned carb( carb cleaner and compressed air through all passages and jets), new lower seals and water pump, rebuilt fuel pump. She starts right up on 1 or 2 pull and idles ok( somtimes a little rough at idle and 1/4 to 1/2 throttle) but lacking top end and and after running for a few minutes it seems to start losing what top speed it would have. Has spark on both cyls and compression is at an even 75 lbs on both cyl. I pulled the flywheel and both coils look new. Top cyl plug is all black and a little wet even though it has spark and lower looks clean and light tan. Could it be the coil or points intermittenly firing?

Has the point's been cleaned, or adjusted? has the coil's, or condenser's been tested? plug wire's going to ground? fresh fuel?

I've read (and experienced) that any residue on the points = bad, I wound up dropping the $ on new points and condensers (after a failed cleaning attempt) and it runs great now.

My coil is has a value of 3 when set to 1k on the multimeter. This is between the spark plug pin and the ground wire. Is this an acceptable number?

You can buy a points kit for around $20 comes with new condensers/points. I'd just go this route and remove that variable. It was very easy to change them. With the points wide open....I set mine so that a .020 gauge feeler would go with the slightest drag, but a .018 wouldn't. Runs very well. Hope this helps.

Re: 9.5 sportwin bad coil or ?

New points and condensers didn`t help, spark is nice and blue and will jump a 7/16 gap on both cylinders. top cyl plug is still dark and a little wet, while lower cyl spark plug is a nice tan color after taking it today. It seems to run ok when its first started or if its been shut off for awhile. But after 5 minutes it starts to run rough and losses power. I guess i`ll swap coils and get a oem carb kit as this is the only thing left. Any other ideas?

You can try a spark tester when the coils are up to temperature. That is tyoically when they give trouble, not so much when they are cooled. Rick.

Re: 9.5 sportwin bad coil or ?

I went out today with new coils installed and still ran poorly. Pulled both plugs and top cylinder looked like its firing better but now i see a few water droplets on the top cyl plug. Could this be my problem all along? Whats the primary culprit, a bad head gasket? Compression was an even 75lb on both cyl. Or where else should i look? This motor is starting to get on my nerves, HaHa. Thanks for everyones advice.

The usual reason for water on the plugs would be leakage around the head gasket. Rick.

Does the primer bulb on your gas line get firm? I had a bad seat on my float needle, and it caused the motor to flood out from time to time. If you're sure it's water you are seeing, its probably a bad head gasket. I know the 9.5 isn't the easiest to work on, but once you've solved this problem you'll have a good runner again. You should maybe check or change your thermostat while you're at it. Careful with the cover....it's made of pretty cheesy metal. A carb kit is always a great idea also, as they are fairly inexpensive....15-25 bucks, and solve many poor running issues. I don't know the condition of your motor, but it is possible for the impeller to break down, and for little pieces of it to travel up into the powerhead causing a blockage in the water passages. At the very least if you haven't checked it in a while, I would recommend it.

Re: 9.5 sportwin bad coil or ?

I pulled the head today and the gasket looked ok, I layed the motor on its side to set up my stand and then put it on the there at a 45 degree angle. When I looked at the bottom cylinder about a teaspoon of water was sitting there ( piston all the way at the the bottom) and it looks like there is more in the exhaust port. Is it from the exhaust housing gasket or maybe from under the powerhead? Any suggestions, Thanks.

Re: 9.5 sportwin bad coil or ?

It can leak in from the exhaust cover. I haven't tried removing the cover on my 9.5 but on my 9.9 I had to pull the power head and didn't realize it until the last two cover bolts so I just tightened everything up and it worked. No more water. Rick.

Thanks for the repys. Once thr head gasket comes in I`ll try it and see if it cures my problem. If it doesn`t then i`ll pull the side cover and replace the exh gaskets.

Re: 9.5 sportwin bad coil or ?

I put the new head gasket on and it still ran poorly. So now I`ve got the whole power head off and I`m going to replace all the gaskets and hopefully this will cure its problems. Anything else i should look for while i`ve got it tore down this far? Thanks!

Re: 9.5 sportwin bad coil or ?

I got it all back together and ran it today in a barrel ( i had the famous broken front motor mount and replaced it). I dont see any more water issues but it seems to running rich, if i lean out the mixture until it dies i still have somewhat wet plugs and the top of the pistons are wet even though it fires right up and idles. Carb was cleaned and float would float when i put it in a cup of gas. Could it be needle and seat leaking just enough to foul out the plugs or any other ideas?

yes, if you are shutting down with the button and it starts cleanly now, don't worry about the wet.
When you press the button it shorts the ignition(no fire) Vacuum is still pulling a little fuel until it stalls. won't hurt anything.
