Sounds as though your good to go. Do your final adjustment of the lean/rich on the lake with the motor in gear. Best of luck. Rick.

I took it out today and it ran better, not great ,but better. The plugs still looked wet and The idle was still a little rough but sometimes if i adjusted the lean mixture it would smooth right out for a bit( but run rough a minute later) but still wouldn`t run smoothly through the rpm range. So i held it wide open and keep turning in the lean mixture until it was just about closed and bingo the motor ran great and just purred across the lake! ( really made the 12ft move) Wouldn`t idle at all because of the closed low speed jet. Plugs look great too, nice tan color. The carb has been cleaned twice and compressed air through all passages are clear. Any ideas why its rich until the lean mixture is closed?

Possible high speed jet has been drilled to large or replaced with a larger jet. That would explain WOT issues, but not idle. At idle the float may not be closing properly allowing excess fuel.

You could try lowering the float adjustment first and make sure it is sealing properly.

I had that problem with mine.....The float needle wasn't sealing and was flooding out the motor at idle.....it ran great at anything over 1/4 throttle. I ended up putting my old needle and seat back in the carb after cleaning them, and its run great since. On further inspection, the tip of my "new" float needle had a little nick/burr on it.

I think i`m just about there! New carb kit installed and link and sync done ( the timing was off a little) starts great, trolls down real low but i think i set the float to close to early ( thinking from before it was getting to much fuel) it will run great at wot for about 20 seconds and then fall and try to regain. If i throttle up to about 3/4 it will run fine. I think the bowl is running out of fuel at wot and float won`t drop enough fast enough to replace fuel. I`ll adj the float to factory specs and see. On a good note- 2 guys, battery, trolling motor, gear , anchor, fuel tank and wood floors in the bottom of the 12ft tin , gps hit 14.5 mph and climbing when it falls.

Well your well on your way. 14.5 is (IMO) nothing short of fantastic and you say you were still climbing. Your float should be set to factory specs. for sure. If that doesn't fix it I would suggest checking your points once more. Make sure they are clean and set at .020 on the nose. I have found with mine the points gap is critical for good performance. Are you running the plastic prop or is it an aluminum prop? Mine is plastic and I don't get that kind of speed from it although it planes my 14 aluminum with no problem. Keep us informed. Rick.

Here is an odd experience I had once. I purchased a 1957 7.5hp Evinrude from a dealorship once, that kept getting water in number 2 cylinder. After every attempt to cure the problem, the water in number 2 still persisted. When I got it, I found that a little corrosion set into the little plate, between the exhaust cover and the engine block. As a result, there was a little pin hole that squirted water straight into the exhaust port at high rpm's, right into the cylinder. I had to laugh, because it must have drove the guys nuts trying to find the problem and after machining the head, and whatever else, they still didn't cure the issue.

I've seen some weird ones.

I`m running the 3 blade factory prop, Rick. The boat is a 12 ft shallow hull smokercraft, circa `71. It weighs next to nothing by itself and i can easly pick it up and move it. This and the motor which I`ve pretty much replaced everything except for piston/rings(had 75 lbs on both cyl before the decarb, have`nt checked it since) surely attributes to the decent speed. I only paid $30 for the motor, the guy i bought it from said he could never get it to run right as it had many problems- weak ign, lower seal leak, bad fuel pump, water leak in cyl from head or exh cover, carb needed rebuild, stuck driveshaft and the water impeller needed replacement. Once the weather clears and the wind dies down here in Michigan I`ll take it back out with float adj. and see what it`ll do with just me. Thanks for everyones help along the way!!

Hope you got it. You are almost there.
My 9.5 is scary fast on my plastic 10' semi tri-hull boat. I cannot run to WOT when alone. Have to back off to keep boat under control.

I`m there! Took it out today and it ran good at all speeds. It topped out at 17.5 mph on the gps with my 7 yr old son, myself and gear in the boat. Zepher, i know what your saying about water leaks, i never found which gasket was leaking as i replaced all of them. I figured a 41 yr old motor was due. Crxess, sounds like you have a nice running 9.5, it probably gets a little loose being only 10ft long!
