Today was the first time out on the water with my 1973 9.5 Sportwin in years. Thanks to the members of this site for helping me get this far with what some people told me was nothing more than an expensive anchor! It was awesome to see all the hard work did'nt go to waste, I had a smile from ear to ear as it started on the second pull and off we went. The smile did'nt last long as the motor popped out of gear and into nuetral, engine revving! The rest of the evening went ok but I had to hold the shifter in gear. What can I do to correct this?
Thanks again guys!

Can't see the video, but it sounds like you have a shift dog problem, might check the lower unit oil for metal particles.

I just replaced the lower unit oil a few days ago and I did'nt find any metal shavings then. (I should probably double check) Is it possible that I put it back together wrong after replacing the impeller?

Oh, you didn't say you had the lower unit off. Double check the the brass shift rod connector and make sure the bolts go through the notches in the shift rods.

Yea, first I would check the shift rod connector. If that doesn't work, I had a old evinrude with the same issue, and the gears were rusty, and rounded. Hopefully the linkage cures it

Ok thanks, I'll drop the lower unit and re-connect the shift rod. Hopefully that works, I'll let you know.
