After some reading I don't think I put the shifting rod all the way back up into the brass coupler. I'll give this a try and see how it goes.

Been trying for a few days now and I cannot seem to get the shifting rod high enough into the brass coupler to get a Forward geard. Is there any tricks or techniques on how to do this?

spread coupler with screwdriver place in forward and connect. just finished complete rebuild on 1969 9.5 evinrude.

I now have it shifting and now it is not running as smooth as it was a week ago. After doing some reading I think u need to clean the high speed jet. Now I know that it is inside the drain plug but how do I get it out? It doesn't seem like there is enough room to access it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your guys help so far.
