9.6 Seaking- how can I tell if it's pumping water?

ALCAN helped me out a while back , but I am not sure if it's pumping water and it makes me nervous. There are exhaust ports in the back right below the cover and at the bottom just above the prop. Where should I get the return water from? How can I access the impeller to replace it if it's not pumping? It has set up for a while , but it runs great for what little I have run it. Does anyone have a copy of a manual?

Seaking
BHP-9.6
Model#VWB27009A 17X
Serial#21540

Thanks

I don't know the year and mfg of your motor, and maybe Alcan was able to tell you what to look for (probably no tell-tale, and most exhaust water comes out the prop -- if through hub exhaust -- or at the outlet just under the cavitation/ventilation plate and just above the prop). There would be a pretty good spray of water coming out of the exhaust port on the rear leg of the motor, and that might be the only visible spot. If the motor is properly cooled, you should be able to hold your fingers on it (back or top of the head) for two or three (four?) seconds without pulling away. It it's really hot to the touch, it is probably not getting enough water circulation. Does the motor run OK? It won't run well if it is overheating. If you put your hand in back of the exhaust port on the leg, you should get wet -- should feel warm water (not hot enough to burn you).

But be careful using your hands as temperature gauges. A shop can test the temperature using a temp stick that melts at a set point. If you can't get comfortable testing it yourself, you might end up have a shop check it out.

Hi TBFH
As I told you, your motor was made by Chrysler. So I would try to find a Chrysler manual that covers small motors around 1970. Probably a clymer book. I don't have anything on your exact year\model. But, if you will post your email address I will send you some imfo for a 1972 9.6 sea king. Hopefully a similar motor.

TBFH, Take a look at Clymer Outboard shop Manual # B750. It covers Chrysler from 1966-1984. Hope this helps with your problem. Hal

Thanks for all the help guys. I love this little motor, but I'm very afraid of damaging it due to the unknown. Alcan, that is a very generous offer and I would greatly appreciate the manual or anything related to this area of concern. Thanks again!

James Day
4511 Monaco Ln
Pasadena, Tx 77505

TBFH,

Oldboat gives good advice. If you can hold your fingers on the top cylinder head for any length of time, it is probably cooling OK. However, since it has set up for a while an impeller replacement is CHEAP insurance. It can't be too hard to do on that engine.

ALCAN, sorry about that. My e-mail address is bowhunter1@ev1.net. Pony express...that's funny.I sure appreciate it. Any idea where I could get the impeller kit if it comes to that? It can't be that hard. Thanks again.

James
