9.8 CDI troubleshooting -- how do I do it?

I just picked up a 9.8 model 110 and it has no spark, I managed to reconnect the crumbly wires and did the following:
1) removed flywheel and lightly sanded the rust off the magneto pickups;
2) removed ground wire from kill switch in case switch was shorted;
3) checked all wiring to coils and CDI box, as well as spark plug wires;
4) put a spark plug (that I know works) in each of the boots, grounded the plug to the motor, and pulled like HELL.

Needless to say, no spark. Is there a preferred way to test each coil, the magneto output, and the CDI "black box" ? If this is going to need a $200 black box, I'd rather save the money I would spend on a new manual for a motor I may end up throwing out.

Thanks!!

First I belive your engine is a ground on ign. system. The tests are, ohm test trigger-750 to 1400,stator coils/per coil 800 to 900//voltage test with a DVA,trigger-4volts+, stator 180 volts+, switch box to coils-180 volts

One other question ... is the black box (CDI) the same on manual and electric start models? In other words, if I find one from an electric start model with a charging system, will it fit my manual start model? I know the flywheel for mine has no ring gear, but it seems to be made of steel; are there magnets in it like a points model? My Johnson has an aluminum flywheel with magnets; does the CDI type of ignition use magnets too?

The box is common to the 7.5, 9.8 and 20 hp of the same vintage, both manual and electic starts, the flywheel is cast and will only work on this system
