9.8 HP Merc / Kiekaefer No Spark (What to Check Next?)

Hello, I'm new to this forum so hopefully this is a legit question that hasn't already been answered.

I have a 1965 Merc. 110 ( 9.8 H.P. ). It hasn't run in approx. 3 years. I can't get any spark when testing either cylinder.

Are there any checks before just replacing the points / coils?

I cleaned the contacts on each set of points. Each gap seems approx. .020.

I checked the kill switch and it reads open on the ohmmeter when in normal position and 0 when activated. However it seems that the two wires going up to the points / coil area are shorted. I don't know if this is normal or not.

Any advice guys? Thanks for your time.

It's time for points and cond. wouldn't hurt to test the coils if you have a magneto tester available to you.

Thanks. I'll give that a shot. I appreciate the reply. This is an outstanding resource for us rookies! Regards, Rodger

I have a '65 9.8 also, of course I rebuilt the magneto completely. The kill button on mine was shot, so I removed the wires that ground the points out.

Pop the flywheel off and unhook the kill wires, then just put the flywheel back on and spin by hand (remove and ground spark plugs) and check for spark. Could be that simple, you never know.

Rodger, just a thought but you didn't say how you cleaned the points. If you didn't remove them, take them apart and clean each contact to bare metal, it's possible they aren't clean enough.

I find that a whetstone does a nice job of rough-cleaning, then once you get to bare metal, burnish the contacts with crocus cloth. Just be sure to keep the contact parallel as possible to the abrasive, otherwise the points won't close evenly once reassembled.

Degrease before reassembling and gap is as you stated, .020". HTH.....ed

After filing points, I have always wiped a business card through the points, to clean off any residual metal shavings. Just put the card in the gap, and pull it through a couple times.
