Re: 9.8 hp Merc Not Pissing well...

i was reading your posts i got a lil different issue took my 88 merc 45 hp out to test run today pissed fine all day had to drop the lower unit to fix the gear and now not pissing??????? but gears all work, is there a hose thats suppose to hook up in the front of the LU?
I've never worked on that motor. But all motors I've seen have some type of water pipe that slides down into the water pump on the foot. If something didn't slide in properly, it won't pee. And your motor will run hot very quickly if it's not getting any water at all.

you should have a rubber grommet on top of your water pump housing. There is a tube that goes up through the mid section along with shifter linkage.
Sounds like its either not on or has fell off. And if so, no water will get up to engine. You want to get that fixed now or bad juju will happen. Post us back and let us know what you find!

the tubes there but i guess it isnt lineing up (tube in question is a 1/2 in diameter tube running along side the driveshaft for the water pump ?) any trick to line up and would the splines on the drive shaft not linning up be a reason the lu wont go on

You can pull the starter rope, or turn the prop if the shift rod has it in gear to help line up the splines in the drive shaft and crank shaft. Yes this is a good reason for the LU not to go on all the way. It happens most of the time.

I usually put the lower unit on the studs just minimally and start a nut, then look up in and line the tubes up with a thin long screw driver while slowly pushing the lower unit on, when it stops try slowly pulling the rope, or turning the fly wheel clockwise slow until the splines line up and the LU slips on the rest of the way.

PS

I usually put a little light oil on the new impeller and cup so that the impeller doesn't get damaged when installing and first running.

Also if your water intake isn't on the side of the lower unit, I don't think muffs will work too well for you.

The Walmart water muff is for motors with the inlets on the sides. The water inlet is under the cavitation plate above the propeller. You have to remove the propeller and use the yellow muff from Mercury bass pro sells them. I found some on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mercury-Water-hose-Kit-smaller-outboards-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem45ec57f357QQitemZ300317930327QQptZBoatQ5fPartsQ5fAccessoriesQ5fGear -As for getting it to **** well on the lower unit above the water pump should be a plastic or nylon tube that the water tube from the power head slides into. It is very loose fitting. What I did was add a piece of flexible Silicon hose that fits over the metal tube and slides into the nylon one very snug fit . Now at an idle it will pee like you do when you really got to go bad. The light oil on the vinyl impeller should not motor oil but be water based (cooking oil or water based like personal lube)
