I have 1984 9.8 Merc that will only run for 2-4 minutes. I have rebuilt the carb but not the fuel pump, but if I try squeezing the primer bulb when it starts to die it does not help. New NGK plugs no help.. fuel bowl appears to still have fuel, have checked float level and needle plus fresh fuel. any ideas?

Thanks,

Hi,

Well if you have fuel then your spark is going away or your engine is overheating.

What are those compresion numbers? Will that ignition system jump a 7/16 inch gap?How old is that fuel and how are you mixing it?Are you getting hot?You will need to do an overall health check on this engine before we can start to help you with this old girl.

Re: 9.8 hp shuts down

the compression numbers are 85 and 88 the fuel is fresh 89 octane mixed with Walmart brand oil and an accu mix measure 50:1. I installed new water pump and it pumps like new when running and I can hold my finger on the cylinders when running, doesn't seem to be overheating. The spark will jump a 7/16 gap.

The motor will restart again after 1 or 2 pulls.

Pump the bulb after startup and if it stays running it's the fuel pump.
