9.8 Nissan-4 vs. 9.9 mariner-2

I use a 14ft Sea Nymph on a lake that has a 10hp<br />limit. At the time I run a '91 Mariner 9.9. It runs like a top, but I'm thinking of buying a new Nissan 9.8 four stroke. The weight difference is <br />77 to 81.5 pounds. Would I notice any more speed <br />with the Nissan. Or should I look for the 9.8 <br />Nissan/Tohatsu in the two stroke at around 60 <br />pounds. I hear they're both good motors, but I would like to get away from the oil mixing. I don't mind doing the extra maintenance. Thanks for any input you may have.

If you can find a 9.8 hp 2-stroke Nissan/Tohatsu, get one. My dad bought one of the '04's and it runs circles around my '02 Mercury 9.9 4-S. He has his on a 14' Sea Nymph (modified V), and it will plane with 3 large adults and fishing gear (about 800 pounds) and run about 25 mph when solo. Before he bought it, he had a '76 15 hp Johnson and it would plane with 2 people and top out just under 20 mph. <br /><br />The motor feels like a toy (at 61#, it weighs just over half of what my Mercury weighs). I don't know how the Nissan/Tohatsu 4-stroke compares to their 2-stroke, powerwise. Assuming they're close, I'd get a 2-stroke if you primarily use the motor to get you where you're going, and the 4-stroke if you do a lot of slow trolling. Fuel economy doesn't really matter on this size engine - who cares whether you use 1 gallon or 1-1/2 gallons in a day?

The two-stroke Nissan/Tohatsu is not imported into the U.S. any longer due to EPA regs. If you can find one grab it! They are still available to Canadians. While the top end is the same the two-stroke is a little faster out of the hole than the 4-stroke. There should not be any real diffrence in speed between the Mercury/Mariner and the Tohatsu/Nissan.
