Can any one tell me which way up I should have the Bottom end crank case seals inserted, the manuel doesn't make it very clear, also If these seals have gone bad would i be getting an oil type resadue out of the
out-let by the prop.

I just replace the upper seal on my 73 25 Evinrude and on it, the seal goes cupped side down and soild side up. Don't know about the residue, but mine was leaking oil out onto the outside of the motor.

The lip of the seal should be toward the engine.
What you are seeing at the prop is probably a mixture of unburnt fuel and exhaust carbon and is a normal occurance, it can be minimised by doing a decarb on the engine also if you spend a lot of time running low revs when you use the engine run at WOT for about 10min before you come off the water.

Re: 9.9 bottom crankcase seals

There are two seals in the lower crankcase head....an upper seal and a lower seal. The upper seal lips should be pointing away from the crank and the lower seal should point toward the crank.

Oily residue from the exhaust can be caused by poor ignition, a cold running block, too much oil in the fuel, extended low rpm running....Try the suggestions by RPJS.
