engine ran great in water drum, but no spark at the lake, checked kill switch,is this a normaly open switch? have no continuity thru switch even when it is pushed.any diagnose proceedures for cdi unit?

It is an 85

If you disconnect the black/yellow wire is there now spark?

no black/yellow....have white/black,brown/yellow,black/white,brown,black.
black goes to kill switch,
cut black wire to kill switch and still no spark, thought that it might be grounding out cdi but it has no continutiy to grnd.

Re: 9.9 evenrude no spark

From the CDI Troubleshooting Guide.

NO SPARK ON ANY CYLINDER:

1. Disconnect the black/yellow stop wire and retest. If the engine's ignition has spark, the stop circuit has a fault-check the key switch, harness and shift switch.

2. Check the stator and trigger resistance and DVA output as given below:

Wire Color: Check to Wire Color: Resistance: DVA Reading
Brown wire: Brown/Yellow wire: 450-550: 150V or more Connected
Black/White wire: White/Black wire: 15-42: 0.6V or more Connected

Some engines use the following wiring on the trigger:

White wire: Blue wire: 15-42: 0.6V or more Connected
White wire: Green wire: 15-42: 0.6V or more Connected

3. Check the cranking RPM. A cranking speed of less than 250-RPM will not allow the system to spark properly.

4. Check the DVA output on the orange wires from the power pack while connected to the ignition coils. You should have a reading of at least 150V or more. If the readings are low, disconnect the orange wires from the ignition coils and reconnect them to a load resistor. Retest. If the reading is now good, the ignition coil is likely bad. A continued low reading indicates a bad power pack.

Re: 9.9 evenrude no spark

ok,brn to brn/yellow has 0 ohms, but when flywheel is moved slowly resistance goes frm 45-50 ohms up to 190-200 ohms.
black/white to white/black 38 ohms.
has no key switch or shift switch
back probed orange wires to coil and checked voltage when pulling it over and got no voltage what so ever! so is the brn to brn/yellow the trigger? and the black/white to white/black the stator? if so then looks like the cdi might be pooched. what do u think?

Re: 9.9 evenrude no spark

Those are strange readings. It does sound like your PP is shot, but verify that before replacing, as it is a non refundable part. Do you have a manual? If it is shot, follow Joe's advice below to troubleshoot.

(MCD Powerpack Failures - 1973 +)
(Magneto Capacitance Discharge Systems)
(J. Reeves)

The usual cause of having those type powerpacks fail repeatedly is having a very small of voltage applied to the Black/Yellow wire at the pack. Test as follows.

Disconnect the Black/Yellow wire at the powerpack.

Insert either an ampere meter or a volt meter set to its lowest DC voltage reading between that Black Yellow wire and ground.

With the ignition key in the OFF position, observe the meter reading. Now turn the ignition key to the ON position and again observe the meter reading.

Any reading, movement of the meter needle, would indicate that battery voltage is being applied to that Black/Yellow wire. If a reading is present, remove the other end of that Black/Yellow from the raised terminal of the ignition switch.

If the reading ceases to exist when the Black/Yellow wire is removed from the ignition switch, replace the switch. If the reading continues to exist, there would be a short of some kind in either the engine or instrument wiring harness.... to determine which, simply unplug the large RED electrical plug at the engine which would eliminate the instrument cable.

Re: 9.9 evenrude no spark

sounds like a good test but i dont have a battery on this motor, and no key.its a pull start.
and sadly enough no instrumation wiring either.
