I picked up a 1978 9.9 evinrude. I started it up in a garbage bucket, started on 4 th pull after sitting all winter. Water comes out the pee hole fine, but little to none out the exhaust relief. There is air (exhaust) coming out. I did shift to forward and reverse but only for a few seconds. I suppose I need to take it on the lake and open it up and see what will happen, my gut feeling is everything will be ok ( the motor looks well maintained) but does what is happening above seem normal and can I overheat it. Like I said, the pee hole is working fine, so I assume the water pump is ok. I let the engine idle for perhaps 3 minutes in the bucket.
I also shut it off, started on first pull, shut it off, then repeated, and it started on first pull again.
thanks

Sounds normal to me. I maintain a '78 9.9 as well, it's a thru hub exhaust,so not much exhaust out of the exhaust relief hole. If the motor is new to you, I'd at least replace the impeller and lower unit lube. I'd also recommend the usual health check with a compression test and change the fuel lines if they haven't been changed recently.

In fact go to the "Awakening a sleeping outboard" item on the Engine FAQs board and run through most of what it says there. (Also link from "It has been sitting 2 years, what to do" in TD's Top Secret File)

You need to be going at some RPM other than idle on the lake for water to start coming out the relief holes.

Thanks for the quick replies. I will sleep better tonight and hopefully get the boat and motor on the lake by the weekend. Thanks again all.
